Why Kemerton

Kemerton Electricity Supply

Power supplies at Kemerton are delivered via the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) which feeds the southern part of the State.

A 330 kV line connects Kemerton with the Muja 1,040MW and 330MW Collie power stations.

A gas-fired peak load power station at Kemerton is owned and operated by Transfield Services. The plant will supply 260MW of peaking power to the SWIS.

Western Australia has a deregulated power market, with State-owned utility Western Power, generating about 60 per cent of supply.

The remainder is supplied by private industry. Other major independent producers of electricity in Australia’s South West include Mission Energy (Kwinana 116MW), South West Cogeneration Joint Venture (Worsley 120MW), and Griffin Energy is currently proposing to develop a 200MW power station at Collie.

In 2006 Western Power became an independent network business. The change was part of the State Government's reform to the way electricity is generated, distributed and retailed in Western Australia. View wholesale electricity market diagram in the SWIS.

Synergy is Western Australia's largest energy retailer.

Verve Energy is Western Australia's leading energy producer.

Businesses with very high electricity usage can negotiate a special tariff, better than standard rates, depending on their demand and whether or not uninterrupted supply is essential.
